Cats often put on weight after they are neutered. Hormonal changes affect the metabolism which less able to regulate the energy intake. Whereas before your cat would only eat as much food to provide it with energy it needed, after neutering you may notice that your cat doesn’t recognise when it has eaten enough. This can lead to body weight issues. Older cats also have age specific issues such as reduced mobility or kidney function problems.

Within 48 hours of neutering your cat’s food intake has increased by 20%. However, the energy it needs has reduced by about 30%. Lowering the calorie intake leads to a slight increase in blood sugar levels and helps to prevent premature hunger. Urinary stones are frequent in overweight, neutered cats, especially if they do not drink enough water. Controlled levels of minerals and acidification of the urine help to keep your cat’s urinary tract healthy. Increased levels of protein with high biological value will help maintain muscle mass.
